The History of United Campus Ministry

WNMU is a four-year school in Silver City drawing students from all over the southwest. Located in Grand County (Population 27,000), most of the income in the area is from ranching, mining, tourism, and the university.

The university is the 2nd largest employer in the city. The population has a high degree of individuals from Hispanic and Native American backgrounds. 43 % of the students are non-traditional (meaning not just out of high school). Many of them commute Of the student population of approximately 2,300 60 % are women.

Most students live off campus, (no more than 400 live on campus). In addition to the students, there are about 300 faculty and staff persons employed at the university.

It has been noted that due to the social background of the students, much of the UCM ministry occurs on an individual basis vice a group or programmed basis. Furthermore, research on generational issues reveals that the current population is not as apt as former generations to be engaged in programmed ministry events.

Accordingly, we minister to students where they are at, find them where where they are, and help them as we can.
